Description Monção and Melgaço is a sub-region of Vinho Verde on the south side of the river Minho which forms the northern border with Spain. It is quite far inland, away from the cooling Atlantic breezes and for this reason has a warmer microclimate. The Alvarinho grapes thrive here as they do across the river in Rias Baixas. In the heart of this sub-region is Adega Co-operativa Regional de Monção, founded 1958 and now one of the best Co-operatives in Portugal due to its heavy investment in modern wine making technology. Deu-la-Deu Martins was a legendary figure in the history of Monção who during the wars with the Castilians in the 14th Century convinced the enemy that they would never surrender the fortifications. The Castilians believed this, lifted the siege and went on their way. This wine is a tribute to this hero. This vinho verde has an aroma very expressive of the Alvarinho grape variety with well developed peach, apricot and tropical notes of pineapple and passion fruit with floral notes – orange flower. It is quite dry with a full body, good balance and a long a refreshing finish.
